Beta Reading

So you’ve finished your book. It was a long, laborious process, but you did it! You created a complete work of literature!

What’s next?

“A celebration – preferably with booze and hearty, high-calorie foods – followed by a nice long, sleep?”

Well, yes…but after that, you need a beta reader!

Put your manuscript in the hands of a competent, experienced reader, as well as someone who’s also a self-published author.

I’ll read your work with a discerning eye, critiquing:

  • Character development
  • Pacing
  • World-Building
  • Spelling and Grammar

I’ll also critique the nitty-gritty stuff, such as word choice and plot holes.

You’ll receive a minimum two-page report, as well as extensive in-line comments on your manuscript.

Genres I read: anything but romance and books aimed at children

Turnaround time: 1-2 weeks normally

Fees: $1 per 1,000 words

No Obligation Sample Edit: I’ll critique 2,000 words (or thereabouts) of your manuscript for free, so you can decide if my services are worthwhile

Payment is processed through PayPal.

Below is a FAQ that may shed some more light on specifics related to my beta reading services.

What’s your beta reading style? Are you a drill sergeant or someone who gushes over scenes they like and fills their report with emojis?

I try to strike a balance between those two extremes. Since I’m an author myself, I’ve had beta readers who gush over specific scenes, but offer little constructive feedback, and I’ve had beta readers who toss in snarky comments that disparage my writing ability or plot choices.

Neither critical style is very useful.

I aim to offer up my opinions as neutrally as possible, while still being encouraging.

A beta read is not a book review. It’s a critique of a work in progress, and therefore I believe a beta reader should act as a coach and helper, not as an arbiter of culture.

How do we know you’re legit?

I believe checking out my own published work is the best way to determine if I have the skillset necessary to critique your work.

The Compassionate Assassin is a novella currently available for free to my newsletter subscribers.

The World Savers is another work I’m proud of; I believe it’s my best-written novel to date. If you’re a prospective client and interested in analyzing it, and Amazon’s “Look Inside” feature doesn’t present a large enough writing sample, I’ll gladly email you a digital file of the novel.

You are, of course, free to examine my earlier work, but like most authors, I believe my most recent writing is the best. It seems like there’s always another level to reach!

You can also read my book reviews on Goodreads to see how I critique specific genres.

I blog here occasionally, though it’s not my forte. I’d rather write a 2,500 word chapter than a 500 word blog!

I also have a degree in English from UNC Pembroke. To read an essay on Goethe’s Faust I wrote for one of their student magazines, click here to view a PDF, then scroll down to “The Devil’s in the Details.”

Do you have any testimonials?

Unfortunately, no. I just started this service in February 2019. But as soon as I receive some testimonials, I’ll post them here!
